Phoenix Contact – Your “One-stop” Solution Supplier

From |

“Covid-19” – a common new term that the world has known since 2019. Many elevated sets of safe distancing measures have been widely adopted, with the movements of people being restricted in order to minimize the spread of the virus.

Singapore was not spared from the paramedic.  The workforce in Singapore, where possible, had to work from home. Schools were closed, and the students moved to full home-based learning. Some businesses went into liquidation while others blossomed, particularly the online retailers.

Many of us changed the way we shop for our necessities or wants. For the heartlanders and neighborhood retailers, they brought their business online for contact-less transactions.

I am one of the strong supporters for online platforms, particularly those large e-marts , where it is like a one-stop solution shop where I can pick up all the necessary items in a single cart, instead of having to go around to different retailers to pick up one thing at a time in person. This saves me a lot of time, and petrol! Bringing more EFFICIENCY, which also means that I can use the same amount of time to get more work done. (I hope my boss sees this…)

This efficiency can be also be applied to the electronics design and manufacturing environment. One of the key fundamental elements to the success of a company, is managing the product costs. When you are taking longer than others to roll out a new design or when you’re not able to manage your material costs, it reduces the competitive edge that you may have. Time is of the essence.

Regardless if you are a Multi-National Corporations (MNC) or a Small Medium Enterprise (SME), the ability to turn around a new design and maintain a high production yield gives a higher efficiency and profitability level.

So, how can companies launch a new design in a shorter time and maintain a high production yield?

Let’s start from the basics.

Every electronic device consists of at least 1 printed circuit board (PCB). The PCB would be encased to avoid exposing the components which would risk damage or accidental electric shock to the user. Apart from the casement, most devices would come with some form of connectors, such as power plugs, communication ports or signal I/Os.

During the design of the device, there are many considerations to make; from choosing the suitable connectors and components, the placement of the connector(s), the light emitting diode (LED), ventilation openings for heat dissipation and many more. Lastly the engineer needs to choose a suitable enclosure or get a customized one.

Sounds like shopping for a “new house”? Pretty much…

Most components would often come from various suppliers and manufacturers. The designer would also need to coordinate with different parties to realize the device.

Being the designer, you would want to reduce this coordination work as much as possible and put the time to better use.

Phoenix Contact launched the first device enclosure portfolio back in the 1990s as a complementary product to the connector portfolio. Over the last decade, the portfolio has increased to not only include connectors, but other components such as heat sinks, keypads, light conductors and displays, making us a “One-Stop” solution supplier for devices.

Apart from the wide product availability, the business unit has also built up competency to be able to offer strong development consultancy and services, such as thermal simulations, printing and customized cut-outs for our customers.

After the design is finalized, the next important aspect would be the manufacturing process. In many manufacturing processes, the standard enclosure would be sent to a 3rd party for printing or opening of cut-outs for the LEDs or the field connectivity ports.

During this manufacturing process, it could result in damage of the electronic housing. This loss manifests itself as assembly scrap, which can result from breakage, poor quality, or nonconformance to specifications.

Meaning to say, you may place an order of 100 sets of the device and only 97 sets come back from the milling process that conforms to the finished product specifications, and this varies from time to time. Maybe you do get 100 sets in return, but at a higher cost.

Sounds too complicated?

Phoenix Contact is able to implement a customized enclosure solution coupled with connectors which will be delivered to you according to your specifications.  We will also walk the journey with you providing complete support and cooperation throughout the new device development process until market release.

Reach out to the local Phoenix Contact sales team to find out how we can help you launch your new designs faster, with increase your yield of production with our enclosure and connector solution.

Now, we have the time for coffee together.

A World Without Sensors, a World Without Internet of Things (IoT)

From |

Sensors are not only used in industrial applications, but they are used widely around the world, in our everyday lives.

Sit back, close your eyes, and think. “What would the world be like, without Sensors?”

Just to name a few applications on things we commonly come across: Our mobile phones have light sensors; automated car parks have proximity sensors; thermometers have temperature sensors; cameras have motion sensors; smart watches have accelerometers; cars have pressure sensors etc.

The Internet of Things is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. IoT could be anywhere and everywhere nowadays, ranging from daily household products such as refrigerators, to life saving products such as heart rate monitors. This blog article will let us understand the importance of sensors in applications of Internet of Things (IoT). Without sensors, there will be no IoT.

Why are sensors so important to IoT? Sensors read real time information, which translates into data. This data will be translated into knowledge, and follow-up actions can be taken. This will in turn result in: better labour efficiency and energy savings, as lesser natural resources are required for manual labour; cost savings in terms of labour, and lower equipment maintenance costs as any minor issues will be highlighted before major ones strike; space and time savings as inventory will be better managed due to automated analysis and reporting.

As good as IoT may sound, there are challenges and constraints which IoT faces. Low power consumption is always a challenge, as the devices are usually not easily accessible, and need to run for long lifetimes with minimal power consumption. We can relate this to having high quality power connectors as the reliability of the connections need to be of high standards. When a connector fails, or in a worse case creates a fire, the after effects will be devastating as the whole plant or office might actually be lost before any fire fighters arrive, due to the distant location of such IoT applications.

In the following exhibit from McKinsey Global Institute, it is possible to see IoT’s potential benefits and challenges across the global economy. With sensors that allow device monitoring on health and wellness, to manufacturers that utilize sensors to optimize the maintenance of equipment and protect the safety of workers. From McKinsey’s analysis of the applications along with the corresponding size estimates, IoT has a total potential economic impact of $3.9 trillion to $11.1 trillion a year by 2025. This is an amount estimated to be about 11 percent of the world economy.

With this relatively huge amount of potential in the market, it is a great time for sensor companies to start working with connector companies to ensure that the upcoming production for their sensors are of quality with quality power connectors and enclosures.

In what ways can Phoenix Contact connectors and enclosures cater to the Sensor industry’s needs? As per the following pictures, we do have 3 product families that can cater to the needs of industrial usage.

Our above product families can be designed into various types of sensors, such as:

Image sensors, Biosensors, Pressure sensors, Chemical sensors, Load sensors, Position sensors, Temperature sensors, Level sensors, Flow sensors, etc.

New Year Resolutions

From |

It’s finally to an end to all the weeks of excess booze and food consumption and the end of the school holidays. The New Year is here.

When I reminded my daughters of the school reopening, they gave me a shocking look with an alarming “Oh no! C’mon…” And indeed, I felt the same because it’s time to turn my attention to the New Year resolutions.

While I pondered over my own 2018 resolution, I wondered where the idea of “New Year Resolutions” came from and I found my reply on Google:

I was surprised by the fact that the practice started 4,000 years ago and decided to find out more on the success rate of “New Year Resolutions” in modern times.

According to the research done by U.S. News, the disheartening fact is that “80% of New Year’s resolutions will fail by February”.

That’s hardly 1 quarter into the year and this piece of information was not to my liking.

So what would be a good “New Year Resolution”?

Personally, I’m not good at making big plans, like quitting booze for a year or switching to vegetarian food or maybe cutting down on my online purchases with online shopping platforms, and the list goes on… I believe some of us feel the same way.

Therefore, to help myself and those who are reading this, there’s a list of suggestions which I, in my capacity, have come up with to jumpstart the self-improvement for our 2018.

  1. No electronic devices at the dining table.
Try putting away your electronic devices, particularly when you are eating with your family and friends. Spending more quality time with your loved ones is definitely more important than the Pokémon or your email. I started this “house rule” with my daughters at home and it seems a good practice to have as we are more engaged in talks. Remember, quality time waits for no one.
  2. Cook a different meal every month
In the midst of the busy lifestyle that working executives have nowadays, when was the last time you stepped into the kitchen to cook up a storm? Try this to broaden your kitchen skills, it may be a salad or soup and you will be starring in MasterChef in no time! Your family or loved ones will enjoy the food as much as you enjoyed making it in the kitchen.
  3. Walk to work / school
This is an all-time favourite. Although I drive to work, I have seen colleagues who have taken a walk up the stairs to the 4th floor where our office is. I think, maybe I shall start doing this too.
  4. Read a book
When was the last time you supported the National Library or used that Kindle that you received from a friend? Try reading “Who Moved My Cheese?”, by Dr Spencer Johnson or “Getting to Yes”, by Roger Fisher & William Ury.

Who Moved My Cheese? Getting to Yes

I know of somebody who is always ready to and will gladly share his books with you. If you need more details, feel free to let me know.

  5. Plant some flowers or grow something to eat
Trust me, I do not have green fingers. But I did not give up on this little greenery that I have been trying to build along my small narrow HDB corridor. So far, I managed to up keep these plants which are curry leaves, pandan leaves, chilli plant, mint and lime!
Hence, if I can do so, you will be amazed by what you can harvest.
  6. Decide on your own
Stop procrastinating over what happened in 2017, avoid all the negativity and put aside all the differences.Your life belongs to you. Do what you want, when you want, as long it doesn’t hurt anyone. You’re going to have a great time in 2018.

I offer to you, the above 6 potential New Year Resolutions for the awesome 2018 in front of us.

Start taking actions and F.O.C.U.S.  Start setting your goal on the sticky note on your board or on your lappie. Stay highly charged and truly make a difference with your achievements this year.

No more waiting for the perfect opportunity or perfect time.

It’s NOW.

Delivering a Memorable Experience

From |

Delivering a Memorable Experience is not just a fantasy, it is our vision.

Being in an engineering company does not mean we’re all work!

Okay, great. The task of writing for a blog on the Company’s official site is confirmed and there is no running away from it.

The migraines of writing an article

Writing an article for the Company’s official blog is not a walk in the park. Especially on top of the personal commitment and work responsibilities, blog writing does require some effort and most importantly, inspiration. That, I thought could be challenging at my “young” age but I know that somehow our readers would appreciate the company’s input on the industry and I shall “be inspired”, somehow.

I pondered over a couple of nights, and over numerous cups of coffee thinking what could possibly be a good article that may interest people to visit our blog. Afterall, we are an Engineering company and like it or not, it’s mostly technical articles.

(Very dramatic. Not the actual picture but you get the idea)

With my dark eye bags and highly intoxicated with caffeine, it got me contemplating– what should be an article that’s worth reading.

For an engineering company such as Phoenix Contact, it is expected of us to pen articles on products which could get a tad too technical. Perhaps I should be writing something that’s not so product-oriented or perhaps something that would get our company noticed by the next face featured on “The Peak” or “Forbes”.

In the midst of the coffee-induced reverie, I accidentally spilled my cup all over the “Company’s Mission Statement” that was lying haphazardly on my desk. That was when I got my revelation. I just had to write something about our mission statement!

I’m not sure what I’m doing

Often times we read about how a company’s products and services could land huge contracts but it is uncommon to read an article that encapsulates the true essence of the company. What truly made the core values of Phoenix contact?

Our Mission Statement

By understanding the goals and vision of a company, every essential member of the company could work towards in the same direction and thus influence our external stakeholders to follow suit.

Our mission statement goes something like this:

“To provide the most Sustainable Solutions in Industrial Control & Automation,

backed up by Class-Leading Customer Service and Operational Excellence,

led by a Motivated Team to deliver Memorable Experiences

This is going to be on our mugs, walls and even on our customized t-shirts

Recently, while renovating my humble abode, I managed to find a supplier who could refurbish bathroom tiles at a compatible price. Being in the Sales myself, I know I am not an easy customer. I fuss about quality, time and seeking answers and solutions to my problems just like any other customer out there. I found myself complaining incessantly, like a typical Singaporean.

Yes, Customers are “always right”

It set me thinking about what actually mattered to a customer?
“Was it the service rendered?”
“Was it the awesome solution that took the trouble away?”

Service + Price = Happy Customers

To me when I look for a supplier, it is about a reasonably priced solution being paired with excellent customer service. With those values aligned, I can almost say it will be a memorable experience levied and I will not wait to share the good experience and give my positive recommendations and feedback to my colleagues and friends. I would think many would feel the same way as I do.

Honestly, one can do no wrong when their customers feel that they have had a great experience because ultimately, an unforgettable experience could turn into a lifelong relationship.

Feeling like a superstar when all my customers like me

Henceforth, when you are looking for an item, say a PCB terminal block, do remember it’s not always about the dollars and cents that are tied to it. The true value lies in the solution that Phoenix Contact can provide in connection with a memorable experience you do not want to miss.

Just like our mission statement, we deliver more than just customer service. We build relationships! For every product you purchase, we see you as a lifetime partner in our business

When was the last time you spoke to a Phoenix Contact representative?

Give us a call. I’m sure you will be pleasantly surprised by the team.

A Boss of a company had just awarded a million dollar project to a contractor for Ethernet Communication upgrading.

The contractor was happy as he knew how easy it was to supply a point to point Ethernet connection for the project and he asked the owner these questions during the project discussion.

Contractor: “How many Ethernet points do you need?”
Owner: “Erm…. I think about 10,000points”

Contractor: “How long is the distance from point to point?”
Owner: “Erm…. Actually I’m not sure yet”
