Stripping Wires Fast and Easy

From |

Stripping cables is one of the processes in wire harnessing, besides cutting and crimping processes.

There are many ways to strip a cable, from using the conventional cutter to using the manual/automatic wire stripping.

There are some basic points we need to know in doing the stripping process.

  1. Cable size
  2. Stripping length

Choosing the correct tool and setting the correct stripping length will produce the perfect stripping result for crimping process.

Manual Stripping Tool

With manual stripping tool, there are some concerns such as fatigue, consistency of stripping length and time.

Automatic Stripping Tool

All the concerns with manual stripping tool can be solved with the Automatic Stripping Tool.

Phoenix Contact knows this and has developed automatic Stripping Tool called WF 1000.

With this automatic device, we can strip cables without any fatigue, get the precise length and it takes only 0.3s per process.

This machine will boost your productivity with high quality output.

Features:

  1. This compact stripping machine automatically insulates conductors with a cross section of 0.08 to 6 mm2.
  2. Multi-strand cables with a diameter of up to 6 mm are also stripped.
  3. Partial stripping is supported.
  4. Special insulations such as PTFE and silicone can be stripped, in addition to standard insulations
  5. The clamping force automatically adjusts itself to the required extraction force. This reduces/prevents pressure points on sensitive insulation.
  6. The stripping dimensions are set individually via rotary buttons. They are shown on the clear display.

You can check out the video of the WF 1000 below!

Wireless connectivity replacing rotary slip ring technology

The Rotary Slip Ring is the oldest technology used to transfer power and signals between stationary and rotating structures/equipment. The Rotary Slip Ring allowed free rotation even when the rotating side was at high speeds. Many machines that involve rotation movement, for example in the cable, packaging, paper & tissue industries have utilized slip ring to transmit & receive power and signals.

Rotary Slip Ring is made up of stacks of several rings which are normally made from copper in the rotary side, with a carbon brush touching the ring on the fixed side. This combination allows electricity to flow between the fixed side and the rotating side.

Rotary Slip Ring technology was the only solution in the past for transferring power & signals from rotating equipment, but at the same time, it also brought about the consequences of higher maintenance effort & cost.

The carbon brushes will erode during the operation and need to be replaced regularly. Any impurities such as dust and oil on the surface of the ring will caused greater resistance or even will prevent electrical current from flowing.

Signal transmission requires a stable and constant flow of electrical current. Due to this reason, the digital signal will have a pulse effect when impurities are present and analog signal will have a voltage/current drop.

Factoryline Bluetooth EPA in combination with ILC series can become the solution to these problems. Signal transmission from the rotary slip ring can easily be retrofitted with a short implementation time. Customers can forget about maintenance and the analog & digital signal will flow seamlessly 24/7.

The Bluetooth EPA modules enable fault-free parallel operation with other WLAN systems, thanks to efficient use of frequency gaps. In addition to the automatic coexistence mechanism of Bluetooth, the EPA modules also offer the following:

  • Low emission mode: for low interference emissions when establishing connections
  • Black channel listing: allows configuration of up to three WLAN channels whose frequency ranges will not be used by the EPA module

The Ethernet port adapter is the simple solution for enabling the Bluetooth capability of industrial automation devices with Ethernet connection quickly and easily. The IP65 turnkey solution is installed directly in the field and connected to the automation device via an M12 Ethernet cable.

Your advantages:

  • Compact IP65 module with integrated antenna
  • M12 connections for Ethernet and power
  • Easy installation in the field

Axioline E – fast, robust, easy

Axioline E is the I/O system with a block design for field installation. Open to all Ethernet-based communication protocols and available in two different housing versions, Axioline E offers maximum flexibility.

The SPEEDCON fast locking system ensures quick and

easy installation, thereby minimizing assembly times. Axioline E is particularly robust when it comes to mechanical loads, EMI, and environmental influences. The M12 power connector simplifies installation thanks to the reduced number of terminal points and 2 x 12 A in just one cable.

Extend Axioline E in a distributed and flexible way in the field using IO-Link I/O boxes.

Cable Harnessing Process – How To Improve in Quality and Productivity

From |

Cabinet CablingIn the Cable Harnessing Process, there are several steps such as Cable Cutting, Stripping, Crimping, Looming and Assembling (Tightening).

Today, most harnessing process are still done manually.

With a manual process, we will need more people, time and quality is also a concern due to human error.

Cable Connections

To improve this process, Phoenix Contact can now offer you solutions in Cutting, Stripping and Crimping with Automated Machines.

Manual VS Automated

Cutting Process

In a manual process, the operator will have to measure the cable length and cut by hand.

It’s fine for small number of cable, but can you imagine if the operator needs to measure hundreds, if not thousands of cables of the same length. There will invariably be inconsistency of lengths during the measurement and the cutting process.

Phoenix Contact's Automated tool Cutfox 10

CUTFOX 10

To address this, Phoenix Contact has a solution with the CUTFOX 10. You only need to input the length and quantity of cables and this machine will measure and cut automatically; precisely with expected length and quantity. So the operator can leave the machine and do other process.

Stripping Process

Stripping process looks simple and not critical, but this process will affect to crimping result.

With manual stripping, normally we do not pay attention with the length of the insulation we need to strip.

If the stripping is too long, the wire will be showed outside the cable lug insulation.

And if the stripping too short, the cable lug will not crimp the wire in crimping area properly.

Phoenix Contact's Automated Tool - WF 1000

WF 1000

WF 1000 is the solution for this stripping process.

We can set precisely the stripping length, cable size and stripping mode.

With 0.3s stripping process, we can boost the output yet maintaining high quality.

Crimping Process

Crimping is the most critical process where it will affect the connection between the cable and crimped connector.

With manual crimping, crimping results defer from operator to the operator.

Stability and consistency will depend on the individual operator.

Phoenix Contact is able to provide this consistency though automated crimping machines for  cable lugs, ferrules, and other crimped connectors.
