Process Infrastructure – Ethernet HART Multiplexer

From |

Process infrastructure is one of the most critical parts of a refinery plant or offshore platform. The topology of modern process infrastructure includes FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Profibus PA, WirelessHart and HART Multiplexer etc.

HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) is the most broadly supported protocol in the world for process industry as there are 40 Million HART devices being installed worldwide. But according to records, only 10% of these HART devices are connect to HART compatible control systems. End user should expand the use of HART devices in order to perform specialized operations like:

  • Asset Management
  • Predictive Maintenance
  • Data Logging
  • Partial-stroke Testing

Benefits of HART

Problems of Conventional Serial HART Multiplexers:

  • Slow scanning time due to large quantities of I/Os in the network
  • Limitation of RS485’s transmission speed
  • Work based on “Master and Slave” principle

Above are some of the challenges faced when using a conventional RS485 Hart Multiplexer and they will become worse if there are more than 1000 devices. Ethernet Multiplexer can solve this problem as featured below.

Ethernet Multiplexer Features and Benefits:

  • Works with existing standard IP infrastructure
  • Supports higher communication speed up to 1GB/s
  • Easy integration into Ethernet based Host system without additional conversion
  • Provides faster start up and device configuration
  • Flexibility in network design like redundant Ethernet

Heavy-Duty Connector Solution for Machine Building

From |

Phoenix Contact’s Heavy-Duty Connector is an ideal solution to replace conventional cable glands if you want to have an easy and quick physical disconnection of power or signal. Many machine building system integrators are facing the following problems with regards to the cable gland design:

  • Difficult to dismantle and disconnect
  • Consumes a significant amount of panel space
  • Errors during installation

After going through the product technical information, our machine builder customer decided to replace most of the cable glands with Heavy-Duty Connectors due to their easy application. a photo of their panel is shown below.

Feature of Heavycon:

  • High corrosion resistance
  • Ensures secure power, data and signal transmission
  • Flexible single or double locking latches
  • Mounting and plug-in Compatible
  • EMC-ready
  • Ideal for operating in harsh environments

System Cabling Solution for Process Industry

From |

One of the challenges which panel builders in the process industry face would be space saving on control cabinets. Many Process retrofitting jobs require panel builders to ensure the quantity of cabinets remain even though additional I/O’s are added. System cabling is one of the best solutions to save space in control cabinets.  One of our panel builders solved their problems by replacing terminal blocks with our VARIOFACE Interface Module for the project.

Problems:

  • Additional 150 I/O’s on current system
  • Additional Controller Module
  • Cabinet Quantities need to be remained

After going through the product technical information, panel builder engineers decided to replace most of the signals with our VIP Interface Module due to space constraints. There are a total of 115 units of VIP-3/SC/D37SUB/F installed in this project. Photos of the panel are shown below.

Features of Interface Module:

  • Compact design of control cabinet space
  • I/O marking for field wiring clearly identified
  • Flexible marking of modules
  • Metal mounting foot allows for easy installation and removal on din-rail
  • Allows flexible module mounting positions

In addition to the space saving advantage, the site engineer shared that it is also time saving and fault free during the wiring termination. When the panels are delivered, the end user saves valuable time when installing and troubleshooting

Retrofitting of Power Supply with Redundancy

From |

A Tricky Problem

One of our customers in the system-integrating industry was awarded a retrofitting job for safety shutdown package. However, the existing infrastructure in their plant has been functional for over 10 years and hence they faced a challenge to propose an equally efficient solution to act as a power source. This is critical to the end user as this would ensure the functionality of all devices in the control cabinet. We were briefed in detail of the project requirements.

System Requirements:

    • Full redundancy of AC UPS & DC UPS
    • Load current: 45A for both AC & DC power
    • Auto current balancing

The main problem faced by our customer was the need of a DC/DC converter which could output a current of 45A. Another obstacle faced was the absence of auto current balancing products, which were not supplied by many manufacturers.

Exisitng wiring diagram for redundant power supply

Fig 1: Diagram of existing wiring installation

Devising a Solution

With Quint power supply’s Power Boost feature, the customer was able to achieve a maximum current of 25A. However, by connecting two 20A DC/DC converter units in parallel, the customer was able to yield a greater maximum output current of 50A. By adding a Quint-ORING Redundancy Module, we also dealt with the lack of auto current balancing. The load current would automatically be equally distributed by the Quint-ORING Module. With permanent redundancy monitoring of the input voltage, output current and decoupling section, the loss of redundancy would be reported before the entire system shuts down.

Proposed Design:

  1. Quint 40A Power Supply
  2. Quint 20A DC/DC Converter Unit x 2
  3. Quint-ORING Redundancy Module 24DC (2×20/1×40) unit x 1
  4. Quint-ORING Redundancy Module 24DC (2×40/1×80) unit x 2

After several rounds of discussion and clarification of the technical aspects, our proposal was accepted by the customer. To achieve even distribution of current, we recommend the following:

  1. All power supply units connected in parallel must be set to the same output voltage
  2. All cables should have the same length and cross-sectional area
