The Only Constant is Change

From |

It has been approximately three months since the Covid-19 outbreak affected us globally. The Covid-19 crisis has brought misfortune to some industries. However, some have unexpectedly benefitted from the situation, for example: mask and sanitizer manufacturers.

Have you ever thought that Working from Home (WFH) will be something necessary before the outbreak? This difficult situation of Covid-19 has affected much of the way we work, how we work with our clients, and even how we manage to maintain relationships with our family and friends (including our customers and suppliers). I personally felt overwhelmed when my company first applied the WFH policy. Professionally, I was not sure if I could be productive and work effectively from home. I also had to find practical ways to communicate with my supervisor, in order to ensure that he could always get the latest updates on my work progress. Personally, I am worried about how I can protect my own health and that of my family from this contagious virus.

May is often celebrated as Mental Health Awareness Month. Through this blog, I would like to share 3 points that can hopefully remind us to always be always grateful amidst this difficult Covid-19 pandemic.

1. More Personal Time

Let us be honest. When we’re busy with our travel schedule or appointments, we sometimes forget to plan for our own personal time. With WFH, we actually can have more personal time to ourselves. We may enjoy our own personal time by watching movies or reading those books on the shelves which we have not had the time to complete before.

We can also do some self-reflection and self-development. As we are supposed to stay at home most of the time, we might find ourselves learning to unlock new skills, such as video editing, hosting virtual meetings, or even our cooking/baking skills!

Not to forget, now we also have more time to exercise. We tend to find excuses not to go to the gym after working the whole day. As we do not need to commute to our workplace anymore, we have plenty of time to keep our body fit.

2. Precious Bonding Time

When was the last time you really spent quality time with your family members other than on weekends (if you do not have any appointments with your friends)? For countries with lockdown measures like Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines, you are required to stay at home with your family nearly 24/7, with the exception of going out to buy essentials. We can see what our kids/parents/siblings or even pets are doing the whole day! While some of their lifestyle habits may surprise you (E.g. your kids write the letter x in a different way than you do), this might be the perfect time for us to have precious bonding time with our partners at home.

If you miss your friends, you can always just call them instead! Video calling our friends virtually might seem awkward at the beginning, but as time goes by, you will find yourself comfortable with it. Video calling our dear friends might now be the perfect way to catch up with them.

3. The New Normal

For those whose companies are applying the WFH policy, I would like to congratulate you! Many front-line workers do not have the chance to do that, and we should appreciate their honourable act of fighting the pandemic outbreak. For us who are told to stay at home, let us be grateful as the new normal is currently here at your doorstep.

We are officially more flexible now! Although we opt to find new solutions in order to be productive while we are working from home, we can actually adjust our activities according to our own needs. We can work from our own beds wearing pyjamas, also at our own preferred timing. We may also set our own preferred music for the purpose of our own entertainment.

Moreover, by doing frequent virtual discussions or meetings with our teams or managers, we might create an unusual bonding which might not have occurred if we meet face-to-face in the office. This bonding or connection will undoubtedly be beneficial when it is the time for us to be back in the office.

To conclude, we must understand that this crisis is beyond our control and it is important to look at the silver lining. We have to stay positive, and being positive can help maintain our mental health. Although we still cannot predict when this pandemic will be over, it is part of our social responsibility to motivate our friends & family by looking at the current issue in a positive way. Just like the old proverb: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade”!

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

From |

What crosses your mind when people talk about Teamwork? Working hand in hand as part of a group of 5 or 10? What about 100 people striving to achieve one goal, from different departments, cultures and nationalities? Do you think it’s possible?

Time sure flies! Phoenix Contact’s Annual offsite meeting in Bangkok, Thailand has just ended. This event in the Land of Smiles also served as a reunion with subsidiaries and representative offices’ colleagues. Kudos to everyone from the various event teams! The planning, preparation, active participation in and execution of the event was certainly no easy feat. Everyone has demonstrated key elements of teamwork, which I will elaborate on:

Coordination and Communication

There was a ton of coordination work which needed to be done to prepare for the events, not limited to the meeting and training from 4 to 6 Dec 17, but also the Themed Dinner on 7 Dec 17 and Teambuilding on the 8 Dec 17. Facing the challenge of limited resources, to interact with the hotel and colleague in Thailand and overseas team and vendors, all parties have maximised the available online outlets such as video calls, texting, and emails effectively with minimum cost incurred. Not to forget, the participants had excellent time management and communication despite the tight schedule to meet customer needs. Everybody was cooperative, asking for clarifications if they were unsure, which made this event happen with minimal disruption.

Sales & Marketing Team

Fun shot!

Commitment and Trust

I am glad to share that the management in Phoenix Contact believes in giving empowerment to the employees to host this event, especially the Themed Dinner on 7 Dec 17. The event committee was formed by volunteers from different departments, such as Marketing, Logistics, Purchasing, IT and HR. With the common goal of making the day one to remember, the committee managed to execute the existing plan with the trust given to each other. However, there is no such thing as a perfect plan. Despite some unexpected circumstances, the committee managed to minimise the undesired impacts by brainstorming and giving ideas and advice from previous undesirable experiences.

Nominees for the “Best Dressed” competition!

Creative Freedom

Although the committee had no experience in organizing the themed dinner event, with combined expertise and experience; they were able to bring new ideas to fruition. For instance, using the latest iPhone X technology, “Animoji” as the opening ceremony, effectively and successfully captivated the audience. Creativity does not always mean creating new ideas; it could be as simple as improvisation of an existing approach.

Adaptability

We all know change is constant but how do we manage it, or at least adapt to it? Although the plan had been prepared meticulously, last minute requests or changes in environment are unavoidable, both expected and unexpected. Take for example, when the weather was hotter than the online weather forecast during the teambuilding event on 8 Dec 17. Props to the committee and colleagues who endured the amazing race under the hot sun with a positive mindset! In addition, they wracked their brains over Thailand’s History in order to gather bicycle parts to build a usable bicycle for unfortunate children. The buckets of sweat paid off when we saw the elated and joyful faces of the children!

Build the bike CSR

To recapitulate, the overall event at the Land of Smiles was smooth with minimum hiccups due to everyone’s efforts which reflect as good teamwork. So in my opinion, Teamwork does not mean we need to hold hands, side by side to move forward, the quintessential elements are still trust, communication and adaptability, having each other’s support. It does not matter if we are spread far and wide across islands and countries, even if it involves hundreds of people, as long as everyone has same clear goals in mind, we will be able to achieve our dreams. Till next time!

The Future of Industries: How the Internet of Things empower Businesses

From |

Future of IOT

IOT brings technology and Human together

What is the Internet of Things (IOT)Internet of Things

Internet of Things (IoT) is a process in which human, machines and devices are connected to one another via a data network or the Internet in order to collect and process data automatically for the purpose of improving efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit in addition to reducing human intervention.

With the proliferation of wireless devices and development of technology, IoT is becoming a feature of our lives and provide opportunities for numerous automated and value-added applications, such as using mobile phones to control air-conditioning at home or using iris/fingerprint for security purposes.

So how could it help businesses?

The potential benefits of automation in terms of productivity and economic growth is obvious. For some, it encourages creative thinking and provides opportunities to develop new skills. For others, automation poses a threat when manual jobs are replaced by machines.

Take for example – Human Resources (HR) processes used to involve an enormous amount of clerical and administration work.

Wireless Remote Data

Big data, retrieved remotely

Automation and Cloud Based solutions

With the cloud-based solutions of today and tomorrow, many of these processes such as attendance, leave and payroll can be automated and standardized. Not only will this enable jobs to be processed at the quickest and lowest cost possible, data collected can be broken down into meaningful intelligence for analytical purposes.

This will enable HR to focus on more strategic tasks such as talent management and employee engagement that requires a wider range of soft skills such as relationship building – the areas that truly need the human touch.

IOT, the future

Incorporating devices, people, and networks

 The Future is Now

IoT is developing rapidly and the technology is affecting our interaction with “things” around us, making it possible for unparalleled opportunities and services to be developed across diverse industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, energy management, transportation, finance, healthcare, retail, telecommunication and IT.

Automation will undoubtedly improve human lives and increase workplace efficiency, and completely change the way we commute, communicate and collaborate. Many manual jobs may become obsolete or outdated as IoT evolves, however, many experts believes that new job roles and expertise will emerge, and there are a number of potential inhibitors where certain jobs requiring human interaction that machines, for the foreseeable future at least, will not be able to replace human.

IOT and Humans interact

Humans are still needed for technology

Link between Machines and Humans

Therefore, “Human” will not be removed from Human Resources entirely as there will be growth in field services, asset management, robotic maintenance, remote diagnostics, and analytics expertise, which will take a human being to understand how to interpret and act on insights they have identified.

IoT will change the way businesses operate today. With the emergence of new technological innovation, companies need to ensure that its workforce is retrained, retooled, recalibrated and newly hired to transition the company towards a research-based, innovative-yet-analytical mindset for decision-making, regardless of job tier in order to compete in the new knowledge-based economy.

Our First Career Fair

This is the first time ever that Phoenix Contact has participated in a career fair as part of Human Resource’s (HR) recruitment campaign. We were pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming crowd and would like to share this exciting and fruitful experience with you.

The NTU Career Fair 2017 was a large scale event catering to the almost 8,000 graduating students. The fair spanned 3 days (9th, 14th and 17th of February), with each day catering to different faculties. Phoenix Contact participated in the Manufacturing & Engineering Industry category, together with organisations from various industries, such as Public Service, healthcare, banking, etc. Throughout the fair, hundreds, if not thousands, of current and graduating students massed the booths, hoping for a chance for both full time employment and internship opportunity.

The enthusiasm of the visitors amazed us; undergraduate and graduate students alike. Even the first year undergraduates joined in the throng passionately looking for internship opportunity for their summer break this year. In our chats with some of these students, they shared that they were eager to learn new things so that they will be equipped and ready for their future employment.
