The new standard in electronic circuit breakers…

From |

Written by Mark Lloyd, Senior Product Manager- Power Supplies & Surge Protection

A major industry trend I have seen over recent years is the increasing use of dedicated circuit breakers for device protection, as opposed to the long-established circuit breakers such as MCB and MCCBs used to protect complete installations. Within the device circuit breaker offering the electronic circuit breaker is emerging as the dominant. In my time with Phoenix Contact we have released a number of new electronic circuit breakers including fixed or configurable single and multi-channel devices with a host of different features to suit whatever applications are thrown at us.

Retrofitting terminals

Screw terminal side entry
Traditional push in ‘PT’ terminal top entry

In retrofit activity, its very easy to incur material costs and labour charges that can ramp up alarmingly from initial estimations. Replacing the terminals and conductors in a busy cabinet, junction box or machine could prove a serious undertaking. Therefore, replacing your traditional screw terminals with a more modern spring based push in terminal might be an initially attractive proposition.  It then it dawns on you that the benefits of speed of installation, vibration proof etc that come with fitting a push in ‘PT’ terminal may be negated by the need to replace each individual conductor/wire to achieve the extra wire length (say 40mm for arguments sake) to be able ‘loop’ over into the top of the terminal. You would need to do this as ‘PT’ push in terminals are top entry, whereas screw terminals are side entry. This could be very costly both in time and cash.

Light and sound

From |

Written by Andy Maskell, Product Manager- Safety & Networks

Light and sound has been used for centuries as a means of communication. In amongst all of the complex state of the art automation, we still use light and sound to communicate the status of machines and production lines.

Automation efficiencies mean there are less people on the shop floor to attend individual machines, so when there is need for intervention a simple LED indicator or sounder can help keep things moving and reduce expensive production downtime.

A compact solution for creating local mains power

From |

Written by Mark Lloyd, Senior Product Manager- Power Suppies and Surge Protection

This is a first for Phoenix Contact…our offering in the field of power supplies up until today is single, 2 or 3 phase AC to low voltage DC, or DC to DC. As far as I am aware, this is our first product that converts low voltage DC to a pure mains sine wave.

So, why is this device different from many of the lower cost DC to AC inverters that are on the market? Quite simply its design is based upon the already established QUINT4 UPS and is electrically and mechanically robust, so suitable for industrial applications. Additionally, the vast majority on the market are usually either chassis mount or rack mount format. As far as I am aware this is the first Din Rail mountable inverter on the market.

Let’s talk the torque!

Written by Andy Neat, Product Manager- Marking & Identification and Industrial Cabinet Solutions

Good morning everyone! First and foremost, I hope you’re well and that your family and loved ones are too.

The last time I wrote a blog I could pop to Sainsbury’s without a queue or face mask among many other normal realities, such is the world we live in now.  Staggering how fast the world has changed…

The UK seems to be easing its way back to normal now with shops, bars & restaurants reopening their doors and with that a very healthy discount is being offered to those that do choose to venture out. Perhaps you’re slowly getting back to semi-normality by going back to work yourself and if you are (or even if you’re not) then we also have offers to help you out in the pocket if you wish to upgrade your toolbox!

Can you “see” what is going on?

From |

Written by Andy Maskell, Product Manager- Safety & Networks

In just about every area of industry we see the need for lighting in one form or another. Whether its on machines to provide a clear status or warning, to view production through protective doors and barriers or inside a control cabinet so you can safely carry out maintenance or servicing work.

Lighting has become an essential requirement in all of these areas.

The ideal power supply for Building Automation

From |

Written by Mark Lloyd, Senior Product Manager- Power Supplies & Surge Protection

Flat and efficient is a good, if boring, overall description of the STEP range of power supplies.

Originally launched in 2003, updated in 2008, and now launched in its third generation, the STEP3 is now even more efficient. In fact, it is the first din rail power supply in the world to deliver Efficiency Level VI – the highest level possible – in no-load and part-load operation. With an efficiency of more than 94% and no-load losses of less than 0.1W, there is far less unwanted heat generated compared to most power supplies on the market.

The new way to connect!

From |

Written by Scott Mulholland, Product Manager- Industrial Components

Our new PTV terminals offer a new way to connect. If you are a customer using the screw connection method in your terminals, you will of course value the benefit of the conductor/wire entering the terminal from the side. If you are a push in connection method terminal user, you will know the speed of termination and resilience to vibration benefits that ‘push in’ delivers. Well now, you can enjoy all of the above benefits by using our new PTV terminals.
