Getting started!

I have just completed my first two weeks with Phoenix Contact UK and my goodness there’s a lot to learn. With 60,000 plus products spread over six catalogues just trying to imagine presenting our offering to customers is overwhelming to say the least. To be honest I was slightly concerned about how a company could manage such a vast product portfolio. I have quickly learnt that the business is structured in such a way that each group of products has a dedicated team managing their lines and experts offering support. Getting to know the product managers is going to be a high priority!

mGuard in a control cabinetIn early February 2017 reports started coming up about PLC ransomware attacks, meaning PLCs were being hijacked and controlled by an aggressive attacker. It turned out to be a proof of concept test that used a tool called ‘LogicLocker’. A tool that was written by a Georgia Tech firm, used to demonstrate how easy it is to control a machine. This tool would use what is known as a ‘Logic Bomb’ which fires all outputs in one go and can be used to do this cyclically.

Smart Phone appsAs I head inexorably towards my 1st half century on this planet I am beginning to reflect on life and how things have changed – particularly in the last 10 years.

Last night, as I sat at home watching my kids ignore me while they looked at their various mobile devices, I started to think about my own phone and how it has evolved.

Do I long for the days of the Nokia 6210 and its simple features, robustness and almost endless battery life? – the answer is yes and no.

A simple solution to a big problem

From |

Written by Tony Deane, Technical Manager- Control Systems

The Client

Major food manufacturer in the North East of England.

The Application

New Thermon heat tracing units fitted to the fermenter processing plant. The collected values needed to be fed into the existing ABB DCS system.

The Problem

The trace heating of temperature zone monitoring element was added to the scope of works after the original ABB DCS design and implementation had been completed. The Thermon heat tracing units have Profibus interfaces and can be seen as slaves by a Profibus master.

Unfortunately, the ABB DCS system was not originally intended to have a Profibus interface and this is the only way the Thermon units can communicate to a third party. The existing DCS could not be economically retrofitted with a Profibus interface.

The new Profibus hardware had to fit into the existing DCS I/O marshalling racks and integrate seamlessly with the DCS for operator monitoring and long term logging of trace heating temperature zones important to the production process.

A cost effective solution was called for to solve this issue.
