“One small step for Phoenix Contact. One giant leap for the Process Automation industry”

In today’s current climate of digitalisation and IIoT, there is a major trend going on across all industries. Namely users are demanding more information from their plant with the goal of optimising assets to improve operating performance.

The increased demand is pushing Ethernet to move further out into the plant, closer to field devices. However, in terms of integrating Ethernet into process instrumentation at the device level, we are some way from that point.

Maximum power, maximum safety

Written by Mark Lloyd, Senior Product Manager- Power Supplies and Surge Protection

For critical applications within the process industry (and increasingly from other sectors) it has long been common practice to use redundant power supply systems. Previously this has required 2 or more separate power supplies decoupled from each other using either diodes or for more sophisticated systems, redundancy modules.

What has surge protection got to do with safety?

Anything that increases the reliability of your safety circuit has to be a good thing…..

In fact, it is a basic requirement when using safety relays or Safe PLCs that the outputs are protected against overcurrent and overvoltage to prevent dangerous failures.

In the case of a safety relay output, this may be in the form of a welded relay contact for example.

Dave Hall, Industry Manager – Process Industry

wlan_blog_image3

Happy Monday All,

When I have been discussing applications in the process environment, I have seen that more and more design engineers are using Ethernet as their chosen protocol for data transmission. Many opting to send signals by wireless Ethernet avoiding long cable runs around plants. This is fine on a standard production line like a car plant, but what happens on a gas platform out in the North Sea, an oil refinery or a petro-chemical plant or in fact any process plant with hazardous areas?
