Why go wireless?

From |

Written by Andy Maskell, Product Manager- Saftey, I/O & Networks.

WirelessWireless technology has moved on in recent years to the point where there are few applications where it cannot be used. The obvious requirement for wireless technology is where it is too costly (cable and copper costs) or where it is  impossible to run cables.

Examples are:

  • Between buildings
  • Across roadways
  • Airport runways
  • Across water
  • Across third party property
  • Escalators/Lifts
  • Cranes
  • Long distance cable runs (Ethernet 100 metres limitation)

The list goes on and on.

What’s new for Smart Networks…

From |

Written by Gareth Chamberlain

For the last two weeks, we have been busy. The old technical wall has been demolished and a new wall has been constructed in its place. Why? You might ask. Not only do we update the demonstration wall every so often to show new products, we also thought this time it would be more suited to be more than just a showroom. So we decided to create the Smart Networks wall (cue unveiling music). This allows us to give more of a service towards yourself and the needs of an application.

Did you come and see us at Drives & Controls? If so, brilliant, this is for you. If not, brilliant, this is for you too!

As we find all too often, not everybody is aware of how vast the Phoenix Contact range of products is. This was a great opportunity for everyone involved in all aspects of engineering to see what we can do and discuss applications and possible solutions. It was a great success and a huge thank you to anyone that had any kind of engagement with the show, you could not beat the buzz of the open days a t the NEC.

Smart Networks for the Future of Automation

From |

Written by Gareth Chamberlain

Throughout my life I have seen huge changes in the way IT has moved in the commercial sector. From multiple standalone servers taking up huge spaces and needing dedicated employees to look after the well-being of each one, to today where all the servers are combined in to a single physical piece with hosted virtualised servers on the physical platform.

I’m also lucky enough to be witnessing the same changing shift within the industrial sector. Engineers who have only been used to dealing with serial devices are now being asked to dive into the world of IT with Ethernet, Wireless and IT network protocols, with projects that demand real time data back to a central server.

Discover our WLAN access point solution for potentially explosive areas

Dave Hall, Industry Manager – Process Industry

Happy Monday All,

When I have been discussing applications in the process environment, I have seen that more and more design engineers are using Ethernet as their chosen protocol for data transmission. Many opting to send signals by wireless Ethernet avoiding long cable runs around plants. This is fine on a standard production line like a car plant, but what happens on a gas platform out in the North Sea, an oil refinery or a petro-chemical plant or in fact any process plant with hazardous areas?

WLAN 1100The demand for data and information flow is growing.  You need to get your machine networked with the absolute minimum fuss.

The new WLAN 1100 provides a compact space saving solution by combining an access point and antenna in a single device. Two powerful antennas with MIMO technology ensure fast and stable wireless in your application.  In contrast to the classic concept, it is installed like an antenna directly onto machinery, mobile vehicles or control cabinets, rather than inside the control cabinet, saving valuable space.
