E-mobility: what is its place in the All Electric Society?

From |

Written by Gary Chater, Industry Manager – E-mobility

Back in January, Andy Mills explored the All Electric Society and what it means to Phoenix Contact. How does E-mobility fit into this vision?

E-mobility is a broad term, new enough to mean different things to different people. It is tempting to associate it solely with cars, but at Phoenix Contact we are fortunate to be working with partners at the forefront of an even broader revolution. Projects for cars, buses, trucks, boats and electric motorcycles are underway, all of which require AC or DC inlets. Talking about a revolution sounds like hyperbole, but consider the BBC piece “Why electric cars will take over sooner than you think”: we are rapidly approaching a tipping point.

The future of battery storage

From |

Written by Duncan Nicol, Sales & Marketing Manager- Device Connections

Back in my childhood I recall being envious of my cousin’s petrol remote control car, which compared with my humble battery model, was fast and satisfyingly noisy. But looking back, I was well ahead of the curve with my battery RC. Now with a full-size battery car sitting on the drive, it seems like the right choice and the future of mobility.

Of course, one of the real benefits of having an electric car is the ability to charge overnight when energy prices are low and wake up every morning to a fully charged car. In the future it will also be possible to sell some of the car’s battery capacity back to the grid when demand is high and make money in the process.

Supercharge your milk float!

The world is a fast paced place, with so much available on demand we are no longer used to waiting! And with time being money we cannot afford to be waiting for hours for our vehicles to charge to carry on our journeys or deliveries.

Phoenix Contact has recently launched the Universal Inlet for use in passenger cars but also for many commercial and industrial vehicles. Imagine road sweepers, refuse trucks, buses larger trucks and delivery vans (and don’t forget the motorcycle!) all being available in electric form in the coming years, our air quality will see a massive improvement when these vehicles are being used in our towns and cities. But how can we reduce the time needed to charge these vehicles?

A new exciting world of EV Infrastructure

From |

The adverts on TV for full EVs and Hybrids are becoming more widespread- even oil and gas companies have been adverting their clean fuel and EV charging services on prime time TV !

My view on this massive change? I believe it is the same as the change that packaging industry is currently experiencing. The automobile industry and the associated infrastructure needs to make changes for our future on this planet, so we don’t pollute the seas and the air we breathe.

So why am I talking about the planet ?  My last blog was dedicated to renewables- solar– this one is e-mobility. We have been involved in this industry for approximately 10 years and some would say that Phoenix Contact is all about connectors- yes, that’s where we started in the infrastructure of EV charging but we have now developed a full product range and we are, as I see it, the technology behind the charge point.

I have joined the new world of hybrid cars recently and plugged into the charge point at one of my favourite pubs (at the weekend) and was pleased to find I had plugged into a Phoenix Contact socket !

Phoenix Contact continues to develop the range, and during 2020 we will launch new sockets, connectors and controllers which will help support the infrastructure you will need to power your hybrid or full EV in the coming years.

One aspect of this industry which is particularly exciting for me is the different ideas that our customers develop to solve the requirements we will all have in the coming years such as:

  • not having a driveway – leads to the need for on-street charging
  • taxis need to charge during the day – leads to inductive charging for taxi rank parking
  • the need to travel the length of the country – leads to high power charging.

Electric vehicles are here to stay

Meeting the challenges of building a safe and capable charging infrastructure.

Electric VehiclesThe fallout from the “Diesel Gate” emissions scandal is really starting to take hold with most of the major automotive manufacturers announcing ambitious electric vehicle programs and governments plotting the inevitable death of the internal combustion engine.

With the success of pure electrics like the Nissan Leaf, Tesla’s Model S and the recent production launch of the more affordable Tesla Model 3. The popularity of electric vehicles (EV) is no longer a niche market for the wealthy, but becoming a mainstream mode of personal transport. Increased media coverage together with YouTube channels such as Fully Charged and the EV Experience Centre recently opened in Milton Keynes are all helping consumers to become better informed about the realities of EV ownership.
