IP67 power supplies – Power where its needed

In recent times there has been a trend towards distributed automation in machine building and factory automation. This has required a re-think as to how we provide power to these distributed components.

To address this, around 3 years ago we released our first IP67 rated power supplies to meet the growing demand for a standalone power supply to provide local or de-centralised power where it is needed, for example on production lines or on conveyor systems.

A robust aluminium die-cast housing with an IP67 degree of protection creates a water and dust-tight power supply ideal for applications outside of the traditional control cabinet.

There are a number of advantages of installing power closer to the load. This includes allowing shorter cable runs which saves money and reduces the effect of volt drop. In addition, a power supply is a source of heat and so removing them from a traditional control cabinet reduces the overall heat generated so the control cabinet can be that much smaller.

All Phoenix Contact IP67 PSUs are based upon the established and reliable TRIO power supply range and so are all wide input range (AC or DC), have excellent shock, vibration and temperature ratings, and all have an additional dynamic boost of 150% for 5 seconds allowing starting of heavier loads.   Our 1st TRIO IP67 power supply was rated at 20A in either single or 3 phase input.

However, 20A is more than enough for many applications so smaller 10A rated versions are now available. There are 3 versions each with a different field connection option, 7/8-inch, M12 and Installation Power Distribution (IPD).

Both the 7/8-inch and M12 enable fast and error-free wiring, thanks to standardized and coded connections.

The third option of IPD connection technology, is known for simple power distribution in the field. On the field side, the connection technology has a push-in connection; the corresponding cable is guided through a grommet and plugged in directly. IPD connection allows simple connection of free wire ends without assembled plugs.

Lastly, we will be unveiling smaller IP67 power supplies at this year’s Hannover Messe. These will be M12 based and are rated at 3.75A (90W). More details of these newer devices will be available nearer their release date in a few weeks.
