What is functional safety?

Functional Safety is the part of the overall safety of a system or piece of equipment that depends on the system or equipment operating correctly in response to its inputs, including the safe management of likely operator errors, hardware and software failures and environmental changes. It is an additional step beyond the traditional product safety assessment and tackles our ever increasingly complex world of interoperating technologies and the hazards they cause.

Functional safety has developed due to the increasing complexity of machines and systems created in today’s world. It is up to manufacturers of safety products to keep up with this trend and create ways to make complying with the associated standards as straight forward as possible.

The definition of an electric vehicle is generally accepted as a vehicle with an electric motor as part of the power unit, and this includes pure electric, hybrids, high performance sports cars and of course formula one’s energy recovery system (ERS). One of the challenges facing the electric vehicle market concerns the charging infrastructure. Range anxiety is still a big factor in the slow take-up of electric vehicles, and so having convenient and universal access to charging stations is a key requirement. Are you protecting all possible circuits in your application or only the power lines?

Most companies are aware of the need to protect their power lines from the effects of surges generated by lightning strikes (LEMP – Lightning ElectroMagnetic Pulse) or man-made surges caused by switching devices, like circuit breakers or contactors(SEMPs – Switching ElectroMagnetic Pulse).

However a significant number stop there and fail to go one stage further to protect their final loads. This is probably the single biggest cause of production stops in industrial applications today.
