Looking into the market space in the UK there are two types of engineer. The forward-thinking professional who is consistently looking for new technologies which will benefit them and ultimately the organisation. For the last two weeks, we have been busy. The old technical wall has been demolished and a new wall has been constructed in its place. Why? You might ask. Smart Networks for the Future of Automation

From |

Written by Gareth Chamberlain

Throughout my life I have seen huge changes in the way IT has moved in the commercial sector. From multiple standalone servers taking up huge spaces and needing dedicated employees to look after the well-being of each one, to today where all the servers are combined in to a single physical piece with hosted virtualised servers on the physical platform.

I’m also lucky enough to be witnessing the same changing shift within the industrial sector. Engineers who have only been used to dealing with serial devices are now being asked to dive into the world of IT with Ethernet, Wireless and IT network protocols, with projects that demand real time data back to a central server.

mGuard in a control cabinetIn early February 2017 reports started coming up about PLC ransomware attacks, meaning PLCs were being hijacked and controlled by an aggressive attacker. It turned out to be a proof of concept test that used a tool called ‘LogicLocker’. A tool that was written by a Georgia Tech firm, used to demonstrate how easy it is to control a machine. This tool would use what is known as a ‘Logic Bomb’ which fires all outputs in one go and can be used to do this cyclically.
