Surges – an underestimated risk!

Are you protecting all possible circuits in your application or only the power lines?

Most companies are aware of the need to protect their power lines from the effects of surges generated by lightning strikes (LEMP – Lightning ElectroMagnetic Pulse) or man-made surges caused by switching devices, like circuit breakers or contactors(SEMPs – Switching ElectroMagnetic Pulse).

However a significant number stop there and fail to go one stage further to protect their final loads. This is probably the single biggest cause of production stops in industrial applications today.

Protection of measurement and control and data systems

Destructive transients in commercial, residential and industrial plants are likely to occur in the power supply system, but also in the IT and telephone system and in the control systems of production facilities via the fieldbus. These sensitive systems can only be protected by a comprehensive protection concept.

The function of lightning current arresters is to discharge high energies without destruction. They are installed as close as possible to the point where the electrical system enters the building. Surge arresters, in turn, protect terminal equipment. They are installed as close as possible to the equipment to be protected.

Let us take a look at some of the options from Phoenix Contact which will help protect these important systems:

If you are a building contractor or installation engineer, why not download our Protection App? Find out how you can protect your building against lightning currents and surge voltages and also how a typical house can be equipped. Download the app in iTunes or download the app in Google Play.

We also have a Surge Protection Basics handbook covering the fundamental points of lightning and surge protection. Trabtech Basics Handbook- Phoenix Contact.
