Phoenix Contact and the world of building automation

For many years, Phoenix Contact has had the ability to engineer solutions for building automation controls – in 2015 Phoenix bought the company Sysmik GmBH which has led to us now having a new controller with new software to offer the market – the ILC 20150 BI which is programmed via Niagara Framework Software from Tridium.

I will attend the Niagara Forum this week to learn about the new developments which will be available to us and our customers, so an exciting week ahead!

Back in January, at the Phoenix Contact Electronics site in Bad Pyrmont, we completed the build of a new office building to house our ever growing team of product and solution teams – Building No. 4 (highlighted).

Below you can see the control panels which enable full building automation, the engineers used a number of our new building controllers – the ILC 2050 BI.

When I had a tour of the new Building 4 in January, the team explained how they choose the best components for the various applications – enabling the install and control to be as efficient as possible.

The typical applications engineered by the team are lighting and blind control using DALI, also the HVAC system is controlled using the ILC 2050 BI which can be found in the basement plantroom.

As you may spot in the picture above, the roof has had photovoltaic panels installed. Our Energy Team helped with their expertise, as Solar Power is also one of our chosen vertical markets alongside building automation. As you would expect, Phoenix Contact products are used to monitor the output of the solar installation and this is shown on the building dashboard which can be seen on the screen next to the control panels.  This dashboard, and the system behind it, allows you to see which rooms are occupied and which you can book for meetings- all very high-tech!

Inside Building 4

Essential to the management of efficient buildings is the need for energy monitoring to enable the building owner to understand where and what are high energy consumers – logging the energy consumption of area or applications within the building or a complete site, Phoenix Contact has a range of products to pick from to help enable you to measure, log and visualise the data you want.
