Top 10 trend predictions for 2018

In the world of device connections 2017 was a very busy year and we expect 2018 to continue the trend. Here are our top 10 predicted trends for 2018 and we invite you to watch this space for new and exciting product developments throughout the year.

  1. Data will continue to find its way into all manner of device solutions. It’s not so long ago that most devices just did what they were designed to do and that was that. But now everything seems to be sharing data and uploading it to a cloud. Data is valuable and has the potential to greatly improve the performance and reliability of the devices being monitored.
  2. Robust devices designed to operate in harsh environments will continue to find new applications and very much related to our first prediction. From communication masts to remote monitoring, protecting electronics from the environment will be big business in 2018.
  3. Customer choice is sometimes a real challenge for manufacturers of electronics devices but can add real value in this internet of things world. Being able to offer customers a choice of connection technology whilst minimising inventory will help to stand out in a crowded market place.
  4. Just in time manufacturing is nothing new but a theme that will really come into play in 2018 as manufacturers strive to offer short lead times without committing to large stock inventories. THR & SMD device connectivity can really help to achieve this by ensuring that the entire PCB can be produced on a single automated reflow production line.
  5. Electric vehicle sales will accelerate in 2018 with more choice on the market and battery technology pushing the driving range ever closer to existing combustion engine capabilities. The charging infrastructure is a fundamental requirement for the adoption of electric vehicles and we expect continued growth in this area.
  6. Battery storage is big business and will become a standard component in renewable energy solutions in the coming year, helped in part by the aforementioned electric vehicle revolution. From energy storage at home to backup facilities for the national grid, battery storage is here to stay.
  7. Differentiation in the market will be the key to success for many of our customer. As a consequence our ability to offer customised solutions will help our customers stay one step ahead of the competition.
  8. Convergence of technology. With the continued rise in renewable energy, smart grids & cities, energy storage and the electrification of the transport sector, we expect more interaction between supply and demand in the energy sector. This will undoubtedly lead to more smart devices being required to maximise energy efficiency and manage the availability of resources.
  9. Displays play a big part in our lives with nearly everyone carrying around one in their pocket. We see displays of all shape and sizes increasingly integrated into industrial electronics to provide enhanced real time data without the need to plug in a laptop.
  10. And finally we expect 2018 to be a very productive year in the UK electronics sector as global demand continues to remain strong and more start-ups enter the market. The value of the pound will continue to help our customers remain competitive internationally and help to sustain growth.
