I have just returned from a trip to Oslo to visit the Nor Shipping Exhibition and Phoenix Contact Norway. It proved to be very interesting.
Having arrived on the Monday evening, we took a walk into Oslo central past the Royal Palace and had a pleasant evening strolling and dinner.
Tuesday started with a bus ride to the exhibition. We had a guided tour around the Phoenix Contact stand, where we discussed the challenges that the marine industry faces. The systems on vessels are often required to have back up systems, so cost effective redundancy systems are of great interest to ship builders. Phoenix Contact has a system to provide back up control using ring technology and the media redundancy protocol (MRP), this uses the Axio Controller AXC1050 and Profinet Switch at the centre on the solution.
One of the other key challenges is monitoring the performance of the vessel and various systems onboard and then transferring this data to the fleet owner back onshore. Phoenix Contact has enabled this by using the MGuard security router which can use mobile technology or be connected to a satellite for offshore communication.
Most of the products on display were type approved for marine applications. The solutions shown on the stand, have been developed in conjunction with major ship building companies around the world, so Phoenix can discuss applications and solutions from a position of experience by using the industry team led by Ereke van de Glas.
The rest of the day was free to visit the rest of the show.
Later on, we were taken on a 3 masted sail boat for a trip around the Oslo Fjord with other guests of Phoenix Contact from around Northern Europe. We discussed the day and various marine applications during dinner on board, I thought this was a great way to spend the evening.
Wednesday consisted of two presentations at the new Phoenix Contact meeting and product show rooms. The first presentation was by DNV GL about their services and capabilities for the Marine Industry. The second by Martin Hecker from Phoenix Contact, was focused on Cyber Security- all the delegates enjoyed the presentations and found them interesting.
We then returned to the show for a few hours before returning home.
