We are going to look into the other type of shielding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what is shielding?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>When electrical\/electronic devices are powered up, they create electromagnetic fields around them. These fields can have an influence on other machinery\/devices\/equipment surrounding them. This potentially can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Affect equipment performance<\/li><li>Generate \u2018ghost\u2019 switching<\/li><li>Stop the equipment performing all together<\/li><li>Affect equipment outside of your cabinet<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are different types of interference:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Electromagnetic interference (EMI)<\/li><li>Radio frequency interference (RFI)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this interference, we need some assurance that our equipment\/machine will function as expected. We need to be sure that our equipment meets or achieves EMC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u2018Electromagnetic compatibility&nbsp;(EMC) is the ability of electrical equipment or systems to function satisfactorily in its electromagnetic environment without introducing intolerable electromagnetic disturbances to anything in that environment\u2019<\/em><\/p><cite>Source: IEC 61000-2-1 (Definition EMC)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"802\" height=\"355\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.phoenixcontact.com\/marketing-gb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/10\/Clipboard01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.phoenixcontact.com\/marketing-gb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/10\/Clipboard01.jpg 802w, https:\/\/blog.phoenixcontact.com\/marketing-gb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/10\/Clipboard01-300x133.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.phoenixcontact.com\/marketing-gb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/10\/Clipboard01-768x340.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.phoenixcontact.com\/marketing-gb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/10\/Clipboard01-624x276.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 802px) 100vw, 802px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So, in short, we want to be sure that our equipment is immune from fields created by other equipment\/machines, but, equally as important, we need to be sure that our equipment is not emitting troublesome fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IEC is very clear about the levels that need to be attained to classify equipment as EMC. Well, we utilise the Faraday principle. Faraday being Michael Faraday (1791-1867). That\u2019s this handsome chap on the right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faraday is best known for his studies and experiments on charge, magnetism and their interaction. He observed that charge on a conductor only resided on the outer surface. He also noted that nothing inside that conductor was affected by any change in electrical charge on the outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Field theory was based on Faraday\u2019s work (which built on the work of Benjamin Franklyn). His work led to the understanding that electrostatic repulsion of like charges causes a redistribution of charge to the outside of a conductor resulting in a net electrostatic field within the conductor of zero. (\u201cWithin the conductor\u201d means any space enclosed by a continuously conducting layer. ) An example of this can be seen in this <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/videos\/search?q=faraday+cage+video&amp;&amp;view=detail&amp;mid=612E51C80DCE92595961612E51C80DCE92595961&amp;&amp;FORM=VRDGAR&amp;ru=%2Fvideos%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dfaraday%2Bcage%2Bvideo%26qpvt%3Dfaraday%2Bcage%2Bvideo%26FORM%3DVDRE\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we shield our equipment, machine or panel we typically mechanically ground the equipment directly (with shield clamps) and\/or make use of the shield foil\/braid in a shielded cable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"709\" height=\"355\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.phoenixcontact.com\/marketing-gb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/10\/Clipboard05.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for shielding foil in cable\" class=\"wp-image-58520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.phoenixcontact.com\/marketing-gb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/10\/Clipboard05.jpg 709w, https:\/\/blog.phoenixcontact.com\/marketing-gb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/10\/Clipboard05-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.phoenixcontact.com\/marketing-gb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/10\/Clipboard05-624x312.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We do this with a view to negating the effects of coupling.
