And if all the research and speculation is accurate, we\u2019re going to be seeing at least 26 billion devices connected to the internet by 2020.\u00a0 This is all great, but it\u2019s easy to feel disconnected from the future-looking talk from a PCB Design Engineer viewpoint. After all, how much of a role are you really going to be playing in those fancy marketing words like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoenixcontact.com\/online\/portal\/gb?1dmy&amp;urile=wcm%3apath%3a\/gben\/web\/main\/products\/subcategory_pages\/Industrial_Cloud-Computing_P-30\/f00896f6-4e69-43eb-92a9-38f7d2378ae6?cpn=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smart Homes, Smart Cars, and Smart Cities<\/a>?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Actually, quite a lot. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoenixcontact.com\/online\/portal\/gb?1dmy&amp;urile=wcm%3apath%3a\/gben\/web\/main\/products\/subcategory_pages\/PCB_terminal_blocks_and_PCB_plug-in_connectors_P-11\/20bab9a1-6261-41de-965a-3f2cc899d2b5?cpn=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PCB designers <\/a>all around the world probably have the hardest job of all when it comes to IoT, cramming in all of that advanced functionality into package sizes that just keep shrinking.\u00a0 The need for modularity is here.\u00a0 Here at Phoenix Contact we have a pretty good idea of some of the problems you are going to face and here are some of, (but definitely not all) the challenges you will be up against.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You\u2019ll be fighting for every inch of layout space &#8211; the days of having a ton of extra layout space to lay down all of your tracks, components, and connectors have long disappeared.\u00a0 With IoT devices, you\u2019ll be cramming in a ton of functionality into smaller environments, and as you know even to the point where these devices are on your body, in your clothes, or even ingested.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019ll be designing an entire product, not just a PCB \u2013 You are likely used to designing a traditional circuit board and handing it off to your mechanical designer for a fit check. But in the world of IoT, this workflow won\u2019t fly anymore. With smaller form factors, it\u2019s going to be more important than ever to get every stakeholder on the same page at the beginning of the design process.
